Stacey Peterson woke one morning with the realization that her steady diet of engineering at a successful job with an oil company in Texas was not her passion. She was homesick for Colorado; it’s serenity and vast beauty. The creative side took over the technical side and she began to paint professionally.
An avid hiker, backpacker and tri-athlete, Stacey draws upon her time outdoors to provide inspiration for her landscape paintings. She often works on location using her plein air studies as reference for studio works that depict locations in the wilderness areas of the Rocky Mountain West.
While an appreciating disciple of the plein air movement, she understands painting outdoors is an essential tool for the landscape painter. But Stacey has her feet planted firmly in her studio utilizing her field studies to complete her landscapes. Her goals are simply – to capture the color and energy of a scene – those things that elude the lens of even the most skilled photographer.
Her warm tones blend carefully with the coolness of the near twilight skies and tranquil Colorado streams. The brushstrokes are intriguing – we delight in following from the beginning to end of each movement. Stacey’s decisions about composition, drama of color and value maybe carefully engineered but we are here to just enjoy the view.
Stacey Peterson was born in 1978 and raised in Littleton, Colorado. Growing up at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, Stacey developed a love for the outdoors that influences her artwork today.
While Peterson’s professional background is in the field of environmental engineering, she has always been interested in drawing and painting. She took up oil painting after graduating from college, concentrating on portraiture at first and then turning her focus to the landscape. An avid backpacker, hiker, and mountain biker, Peterson draws upon her time outdoors to provide the inspiration for her oil paintings. She often works on location, and uses her plein air studies as reference for studio works that typically depict locations in the wilderness areas of Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West.
Stacey is an award-winning painter, most recently honored with awards in the 2013 Oil Painters of America Western Regional, 2012 Salon International, and the 2012 Plein Air for the Park show. She was featured as one of Southwest Art Magazine’s “21 Under 31” in 2006, and has also had her work published in American Artist and Western Art Collector Magazine.
Stacey’s art education includes coursework at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, and workshops with nationally recognized painters Dan Young, Jay Moore, and John David Phillips. By way of formal education, Stacey holds a B.Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Science from the Colorado School of Mines.
Peterson is a signature member of the Oil Painters of America (OPA), and a member of Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters (RMPAP). She lives in Evergreen, Colorado with her husband Nathan and two children.
