If you have ever visited castles in Europe, Victorian collections, or places like the Barnes Collection in Pennsylvannia, you will see paintings hung from floor to ceiling. However, the current aesthetic is lower. If you compare clothes racks in department stores today with the height 30 years ago (for those of us old enough to remember such things!) you'll find that everything is quite low and within reach. So the proper height for a painting is such that the mid-point is eye-level for a person of modest stature.   As with any rule, there are exceptions. For example, if the main subject matter of the painting is towards the bottom of the canvas it may be appropriate to go up a few inches. Another exception which arises frequently is the placement of large paintings over a high fireplace mantle. When that occurs, the best solution is to have the bottom of the frame within two to five inches of the mantle, thus leaving a larger space between the top of the frame and the ceiling. 1904   "Oriana" 1861   Oil on Wood  Olga and Aleksey Ivanov are contemporary masters, who have illustrated over 100 children's books.  Their expertise spans all genre and mediums, egg tempera, illustrations, oil, pastel and watercolor. Their contemporary take on the Renaissance style of portraits is unique, imaginative and poignant.  Methodical reverence is adhered to when preparing the egg tempera, just as it was hundreds of years ago, including the application of gold leafing.  Timeless beauty is portrayed in each figurative the Ivanov's paint. Olga and Aleksey's "Porcelain" may be acquired at the American Art Invitational, May 9th. The Ivanov Exhibition opens November 2014 at Saks Galleries Denver, Colorado.   Frederick Sandys' "Oriana" may be viewed at The Tate.  The subject is taken from an early poem by Tennyson, "The Ballard of Oriana", 1857.  In the poem, Oriana stands at the wall of the castle, watching her betrothed in battle. Claude Monet was the founder of the French Impressionist style of painting and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein aire landscape painting. Walt Gonske has many of Monet's traits: prolific, a practitioner of plein aire painting and a love of nature.  Walt Gonske paints over 300 days a year on the road from small to large canvases.  He paints throughout Northern New Mexico and Colorado, among other locations. He is literally driven to create the emotion he feels bound to in nature. His brushstrokes are thick like that of an impasto painter using vivid color to express the beauty in the land.  He is a member of the Taos Society of Artists created by Old Masters such as "Buck" Dunton, Blumenschein and Crouse. Wyeth.  After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, he moved West to Colorado, settling permanently in 1933.  He was greatly inspired after his first trip into Navajo Country setting the tone for his most famous works.
