This class is full of information and activities. I will take each student through the 5 stages of creating a landscape painting. Starting from the beginning of ideas and concepts to design and solid compositions., Then, working with color theory and under-painting, using color as a way to make your painting sing. We will work with values and techniques.

Class includes, Two studio days where students will follow me on the same paintings using photos. This includes landscape subject elements: Rivers, Trees, and Skys.

One day of Plein Air will be included (Denver Botanical Gardens) so students can use color studies with photos and experience painting out of doors. Demos daily plus reviews and a 1/2 day outing to the Denver Art Museum with 1/2 day off. One day of open painting with Closing party. Everydays includes food and amission fees

The goal is to expose artist to new ideas and creative process so that they feel more in control of there painting and where it is going. Plan for lots of information, handouts and a unique experience that will keep you motivated for a year. Be prepared to laugh, joke around and get serious.

Personal comment.
"I enjoy share information and ideas that I have learned so far in life. With a strong design and color background I like to bring conception theories and ideas to the table for discussion. Many of my past students now show in Galleries and win awards at shows. But the most important have a better sense and confidence for there work."

 Ron Hicks “Welcome Advance”

There are many components that can go into composing successful visual statements.  Narrowing ones focus - to understand what these are, what their balance is, and how to utilize them to say whatever it is we are trying to say - is very important in achieving this goal.

This class will utilize the figure in intimate settings, exploring light and shadow - various visual elements (shape, value, edges, color) - their relationships to aid in seeing the "Big Idea".

There will be a demo and individual instruction.  This class is designed for the intermediate to advanced student, but all are welcome.  The instructor works primarily in oil, students may work with any medium they choose to bring (pastel, watercolor, and etc.).

Jay is welcoming beginning and emerging artists to this very special workshop. You will need some experience painting outdoors and all outdoor painting gear.

The object of this three-day workshop is to introduce you to the three most important ingredients found in all great paintings. The biggest element to a successful painting is having a strong concept. That is the idea or spark that inspired the painting in the first place. The composition is a way to best arrange the shapes to get your idea across -what to emphasize and subordinate. With the big shapes solved, the next most important decision is what values will you assign to each shape. Many artists get too involved in color, detail and texture and lose the overall impression. By knowing the key objectives up front, you will be able to make every stroke count toward that goal. You will be confident, your paintings will have more emotional impact, and you will be more consistent.

Day One: Meet at Saks Galleries Annex for a morning discussion on building a strong CONCEPT. I will demonstrate that afternoon in Washington Park.

Day Two: A short discussion on COMPOSITION followed by students sketching and painting in Washington Park.

Day Three: A short discussion on VALUES followed by studies in grey markers and then in the afternoon, students painting. Wrap-up at the gallery to conclude the workshop.

You are welcome to pay by Credit Card, Check or Cash. Classes must be paid in full two weeks prior to classes. Light breakfast and gourmet lunch included. Tickets to the Denver Museum of Art and the Botanical Gardens are included.
